Best tools for beginners: the starter bench for phone repair

New techs overspend on the wrong gear and then fight the jobs with the tools they skipped. The starter bench below covers screens, batteries and charge ports on modern phones — the three repairs that make up most of the work.

Buy these first
This is the minimum kit that lets you complete a screen or battery job cleanly.
- Precision screwdriver set with Pentalobe P2, Phillips #000, Tri-point Y000 and Torx T2/T3 — the four heads that open almost every modern phone.
- Curved and straight ESD tweezers — curved for connectors and flexes, straight for screws and shields.
- Heating pad or hot plate with temperature control — softens display and back-glass adhesive without cooking the panel.
- Suction cup / lifter plus thin steel and plastic opening picks.
- Plastic spudger and nylon prying tools for connectors — never lever a connector with metal.
- Magnetic screw mat to keep screws in their positions per model.
- Anti-static wrist strap and mat.
Consumables you'll run out of
These are the items that quietly stall a bench mid-job. Keep spares on the shelf, not on order.
- B-7000 or equivalent screen adhesive, plus pre-cut adhesive strips for common models.
- Isopropyl alcohol 99% and lint-free wipes.
- Screen frame adhesive tape, 2 mm and 3 mm.
- Replacement waterproof gaskets for the models you service most.
- UV glue and a UV lamp if you plan to do glass-only refurbishment.

What beginners get wrong
Two habits cause most first-year damage: prying connectors with metal tools, and applying heat for too long in one spot. Both are avoidable with the cheap tools above.
- Always disconnect the battery first — before the display flex, every time.
- Keep screws in their exact positions; a long screw in a short hole is a board-level repair.
- Heat in slow passes across the whole edge rather than parking on one corner.
- Test the repair fully before reassembling adhesive — reopening is cheaper than a callback.
